Green Festival
Green Festival
Tall Ships Tacoma® 2008 is proud to present an eco-friendly festival. As host to a fleet of ships powered by wind, we want to make our festival as kind as possible to the earth.
Thanks to our partners at the Tacoma Public Works Department, Solid Waste and Recycling, we are able to make recycling accessible, convenient and easy for our guests.
TTSO encourages all festival guests to help us make Tall Ships Tacoma® 2008 a Green Festival.
Recycling
There will be a number of plastic and paper recycling bins in each village. These big blue bins are easy to spot.
Items That Can Be Recycled:
- Plastic bottles (empty and lids removed)
Better yet, refill your bottles and reuse while enjoying the festival!
- Plastic bags
- Milk and juice cartons
- Aluminum cans
Brown garbage bins are available around each village for waste products and items that cannot be recycled.
Items That CANNOT Be Recycled:
- Cups
- Dirty paper plates
- Disposable diapers (clean or dirty)
- Napkins
- Paper towels
- Styrofoam products
Anything with food residue cannot be recycled unless it is cleaned first
Recycling helps us all in many ways:
- Save energy. It takes less energy to make recycled products than it does to use new materials.
- Save natural resources. Using virgin materials often requires extracting and processing raw materials from the earth. This process can pollute our air, water and land.
- Save landfill space. Recycled items go into new products instead of wasting landfill space.
- Create jobs. Recycling creates more jobs – about 6:1 – in comparison to land-filling.
- Save money. Decrease the size of your garbage container and increase the size of your recycle container – you’ll save money and the environment.
Did you know?
At our current rate of disposal, the Tacoma landfill will be full in 2025. With no other identified local landfills, Tacoma waste will have to be trucked out of the area, emitting carbon emissions and causing further harm to our environment. Recycling and re-using items will help keep Tacoma and all of South Puget Sound beautiful.
Tall Ships® Tacoma 2008 is also proud to offer pre-consumer food waste composting to our food vendors.
