Located at 535 Dock Street, Suite 210 in the Dock Street Building, the Media Center is a full-staffed office with experienced volunteers to answer your questions and fulfill your needs. The Media Center will include a Media Work Room, Media Briefing Room, Photo/Video Pool Office, Media Help Desk, and office space for media staff. Media accreditation will also be distributed from the Media Center.

For the Parade of Sail, media may also pick up their accreditation at Cummings Park.

A variety of information including press kits, sponsor press kits and fact sheets will be available in the Media Center.

Media Accreditation

ACCREDITATION REQUEST DEADLINE – JULY 1!!

Media accreditation is required for access to the Media Center, Media Parking Area on the Foss Waterway, Parade of Sail VIP Parking and VIP Viewing Area at Cummings Park (July 3) and the Evening on the Esplanade Preview Party (July 3.) For ship access, accreditation AND an escort from the Media Center is required.

Accreditation applications are available online and can be emailed or faxed to the Media Center.

Broadcaster needing assistance before and during the festival can contact our Broadcast Liaison Beth Sylves at (253) 377-3656.

Media Parking

From July 1-2, media can drive to and park at the Media Center on Dock Street. There are no vehicle restrictions on Dock Street during this time.

From July 3-7, media must park in the Media Parking Lot on the east side of the Foss Waterway (access with media accreditation). Regular shuttles will transport media to the festival grounds.

Directions to Media Parking Lot from I-5 (automobiles)

Take Exit 133 to City Center/I-705 North/Tacoma Dome Use far right lane and exit immediately RIGHT onto East 26th Street/Tacoma Dome ramp At stop light, turn RIGHT onto East 26th Street and merge into left lane At stop light, turn LEFT onto East D Street, continue over new overpass Go straight and look for Media Parking Lot signs East D Street arterial becomes East 15th Street at stop sign At stop sign, turn LEFT onto St. Paul Avenue and follow At the fork in road, stay LEFT and look for Media Parking Lot signs Follow road under the 11th Street bridge to end of road At “T” intersection, turn RIGHT onto East D Street and go one block to Media Parking Lot

Take Portland Avenue Exit and turn NORTH toward the Port of Tacoma Turn LEFT on East 11th Street As you approach the “Y” near the 11th Street bridge, stay RIGHT and look for Media Parking Lot signs Turn RIGHT at the “T” onto East D Street Media Parking Lot is one block ahead on the left

Media Parking for the Parade of Sail

The VIP Viewing Area for the July 3 Parade of Sail will be at Cummings Park on Ruston Way (near the Lobster Shop). A limited amount of media parking will be available onsite – present your Tall Ships® Tacoma media accreditation or press credential to access the parking area.

Covering the Parade of Sail

All media are welcome to attend the VIP Viewing of the Parade of Sail at Cummings Park on Ruston Way (near the Lobster Shop). The viewing area opens at 10 a.m.

A Media Tent will be available on site to support media covering the parade. Media accreditation can also be picked up here.

The Welcome Ceremony will begin around 11 a.m. at the stage. The VIP Viewing Area has prime viewing of the parade as it sails by and dedicated photo positions for photographers and broadcasters will be available on the west side of the pier.

Access to Ships

Accredited media can request access to ships while they are moored in the Foss Waterway. Please make your request for interviews or tours at the Media Center Help Desk. Upon approval of your request from the captain, you will be escorted to the ship by a Media Center volunteer.

Access to all ships requires a security bag search before entering the dock area.

Unfortunately, Tall Ships Tacoma cannot provide free tickets to media for the sailing excursions. A limited number of media may go out on a media boat to photograph the sailing excursions. If media wish to sail on one of the tall ships, they will need to purchase a ticket.

Media Boats

Media must reserve a spot on a media boat in advance. Currently, the following media boats will be available:

July 3 6 – 10 a.m. (departs from Tacoma Yacht Club for Quartermaster Harbor)
July 3 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. (departs from Media Center for Parade of Sail)

July 5 2 – 4 p.m. (departs from Media Center for Sailing Adventure)

If you are using a tripod on a media boat, please make sure it has non-marking rubber feet. Likewise, all passengers must wear non-marking shoes with rubber soles.

Please note that life vests must be worn while on a media boat. Life vests will be provided and a limited number of lightweight, collar-less PFDs will be available for check-out at the Media Center. Life vests can be bulky so if mobility is important please feel free to bring your own inflatable life vest.

Limited refreshments will be available on media boats. If you are scheduled to be out for an extended time, please feel free to pack your own snack. Beverages and snacks will be available in the Media Center.

There is no smoking and no alcohol allowed on media boats.

Media boats are provided by Tall Ships® Tacoma volunteers at their own expense. Please thank our captains and first mates for donating their time, boats and fuel during the festival.

Schedule of Events Open to Media

July 2
Arrival of ships in Quartermaster Harbor, 2 p.m. (via media boat)

A media boat will depart the Tacoma Yacht Club to transport media to Quartermaster Harbor to view the arrival of the ships from Port Orchard. Media wishing to go to Dockton via land should make their own arrangements.

July 3
Welcome Ceremony with Native American tribes in Quartermaster Harbor, 6 a.m. (via media boat) A media boat will depart the Tacoma Yacht Club to transport media to Quartermaster Harbor to view the Tribal Welcome Ceremony (begins about 7 a.m.). Two canoes from the Puyallup Tribe – the Puyallup Canoe Family “Thunder Spirit” and the Chief Leschi School Canoe “The Spirit of the Wolf Protects” will offer a traditional greeting and exchange of gifts to several of the ships.

July 3
Parade of Sail Viewing, 11 a.m. at Cummings Park Official Welcome Ceremony for the festival. Hosted by Amanda Westbrooke of TV Tacoma.

July 3
Tribal Welcome Ceremony and Gift Exchange with the Eagle, tentative 3:15 p.m. near the Media Center Tribal leaders from the Puyallup Tribe will offer a traditional greeting and exchange of gifts to Capt. Chris Sinnett of the Eagle at the dock.

July 3
Evening on the Esplanade Festival Preview Party, 7 p.m., at the Museum of Glass Festival preview includes access to some of the ships moored in the Northwest Village Passage. Media table will be staffed for media inquiries.

July 4
Fireworks Cruises. Several ships will offer sailing adventures during the Freedom Fair fireworks show. While no media boats will be provided, media may purchase tickets for one of the cruises.

July 5
Visit of Camp Patriot (disabled Iraqi War veterans) to the Eagle, 7 p.m., on the Eagle The USCG Eagle will host three disabled Iraqi War veterans from Camp Patriot, a non-profit organization that provides outdoor recreational experiences for disabled veterans. The three veterans are participating in the “Quest for the Summit” on Mount Rainier which begins July 7. Press time on the Eagle will be 7 p.m., with a photo op landside following the formal program.

July 6
Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, 10:30 a.m., in the Treasure Cove Village The Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Harvey Felder, will perform a free concert of light classics, popular and patriotic favorites at the Treasure Cove Village stage. The TSO will pay tribute to the military by performing Bob Lowden’s Armed Forces Salute featuring arrangements of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard themes.
